HALO (Humberside And Lincolnshire Orienteers) is organising a beginners' orienteering event at Longcroft School, Burden Road in Beverley on Sunday, 13 December 2009, between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm.
No experience is necessary and coaches will be on hand to explain what it is all about.
HALO has also established a regular weekly orienteering club night in Beverley which meets in the Girls' Gymnasium at Longcroft Upper School every Monday evening, from 6.00 to 7.30 pm.
The club nights, which are led by qualified by British Orienteering coaches are suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels and includes the following activities -
Group runs
Circuit training
Indoor and outdoor orienteering exercises
Problem solving activities
Orienteering is now a major sport in education meeting the developmental needs, both physical and mental of pupils. It is an important vehicle for delivering Outdoor Adventurous Activity within the English National PE Curriculum as well as providing the opportunity for cross-curricular links with maths, geography and citizenship studies. It also offers an exciting multi-dimensional extra-curricular activity which was one of the reasons for setting up the club nights.
Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. It is a great sport for runners, joggers and walkers who want to improve their navigation skills or for anyone who loves the outdoors. Orienteering - the adventure sport for all.
