Project Manager - Sports Awards
I'll be honest; I've not been actively involved in sport since my school days, not in a playing capacity anyway. I enjoy keeping fit but my sporting activity is strictly limited to watching. I've been an avid Hull City fan since the age of eleven. I attend all home games with my dad and I love it, not only because I enjoy watching the game, but also because it gives me some time with my dad.
I enjoy watching all sports but it wasn't until I became involved with the sports awards that I realised just how much sport means to people and how powerful it is. We all notice this when a World Cup, Olympics or other big sporting event is on, but I can honestly say that this happens every week locally, just on a smaller scale and I've been lucky enough to witness it.
It has been a pleasure going out and filming local sports clubs and events because the atmosphere is always brilliant. Whether people take their sport seriously or do it just for fun, there is no escaping the fact that sport brings people together. It's brilliant to see people of all ages and abilities coming together to do something they enjoy whilst helping them to keep fit and healthy.
The feedback I'm getting from people I speak to about the sports awards is immensely positive and it seems that there is a real hunger for it. As a sports mad region it's time we give credit to everyone involved in local sport. Take a minute now to imagine what life would be like without sport.
You can't can you, and that's why sport is so important. It touches each and every one of us and helps make us who we are.
I never realised how many amateur sports clubs and teams there are locally until I got involved and I find it truly inspirational. I was shocked by the number of volunteers it takes to keep these local sports teams running. Seeing people dedicate so much of their free time to help run and manage local teams has left me with a real sense of pride and admiration. It's such a positive news story for the region and that's what we desperately need at this time; something to be proud of and to make us smile.
I would urge everyone reading this to get involved in the sports awards. I bet that like me you'll be inspired and who knows, you might even decide to take up a new sport yourself.
