Why Sailboat Racing?
Like most sport mad kids I have played, and continue to do so, a variety of sports, football, cricket, swimming, basketball, tennis as well as sailing. Coming from a sailing family I have always had a close up view of top level sailing. My dad sailed to a high level and even when very young I got to go along to all sorts of events when he was competing. The skill and commitment I saw from the top guys made me realize this was probably the sport for me.
Having spent a couple of years crewing for my dad in club races I moved into a single handed Topper dinghy. Since that time I have been moving up the rankings and late last year moved up into the Laser Radial class. The standards here are very high but this just inspires you to work harder and improve more. Racing in dinghies offers a great physical and mental challenge while being technically very demanding. The wind conditions are out of your control so unlike other sports you can be challenging the wind and your opponents.
I think sport matters. I think East Yorkshire sport matters. Therefore it goes without saying that I think the Hull & East Yorkshire Sports Awards matter. And that's why I will be supporting them.
