David Phillips
Ice Hockey Elite League and Great Britain defenseman.
I currently play Ice Hockey in the Elite League for the Belfast Giants. I have been with the Giants for the last year since I transferred from my home town team, the Hull Stingrays.
I have also been given the honour of representing the Great Britain Ice Hockey team (23 Caps), winning a Bronze medal at the 2009 IIHF World Championships in April.
I started playing Ice Hockey around the age of 8. I really enjoyed ice skating at the Hull Arena, then my dad took me to watch an ice hockey game and ever since then I've been hooked on the sport. I soon started on a beginners session and progressed up through the Hull youth teams, also playing inline-roller hockey as I just couldn't get enough. I loved playing both sports because it was a change from playing football and rugby and the main thing was that I stuck at it and never gave up.
I live and breathe Ice Hockey, I have met some of my closest friends through the sport and have had the opportunity to visit many countries across Europe and have been privileged to play in some really nice places.
I think sport in general is an excellent way for people to keep fit, meet new friends and build excellent social skills. I think everyone should find a sport that they can get into and enjoy it no matter what.
Due to my work commitments I don't get the chance play other sports that often, however I do enjoy rugby league and like to watch both the Hull teams in the Superleague whenever I can.
I have recently been called up by the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League in the USA to invite me to their Prospects Camp in July, this is probably my biggest sporting achievement to date and a fantastic opportunity for me, followed closely by winning a bronze medal with Great Britain and collecting the 'Player of the Game Award' in the medal game at the 2009 IIHF World Championships.
As a local lad born in Hull, I'm really pleased to support the Hull & East Yorkshire Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards because anything that recognises the hard work and determination of local sports people is a good thing. I also think that ice hockey locally and in general needs additional recognition in the UK and it would be great to get more young people involved with the sport.
