Sport isn't just about keeping fit. It's about the sense of achievement, of camaraderie and most of all, fun.
Originally, I bought a mountain bike for fitness reasons. I was going through the motions trying to find something that suited me - everything from cross training to aerobics - but I just didn't enjoy any of them. As a last resort I bought an old bike to see if that would take my interest. I haven't looked back.
After loving it for fitness it turned into a hobby, a passion, and suddenly exercise wasn't the primary reason for doing it anymore.
Although I enjoy heading out onto the tracks by myself, iPod on and in a world of my own, there's nothing better than meeting up with the lads for a big ride. We tend to meet up a couple of times a week and although we're all competitive and laugh at each others mistakes, the highlight is being able to hang out with your friends doing something you love. Plus, you get the best of both worlds, pub conversation with your mates while you're being active and keeping fit.
It's a fantastic sensation to be speeding down a dusty track, always having to be ahead of the game watching for the next turn and choosing the right position. Climbs are tough, I don't exactly enjoy them, but the sense of achievement you get at the end, especially when you can feel yourself getting fitter, is indescribable
As a guy who was never sporty, I've been lucky enough to find the right sport for me. I'm backing the Hull and East Yorkshire Sporting Heroes and Champions Awards because sport really does change your life - both in fitness and socially - and all those people who are involved in giving people the opportunity to have that experience and who do it themselves deserve to be recognised.
